The state of California has been a leader in the solar power energy movement for quite some time. The state can be credited for having both leaders and innovations that help to propel the solar movement forward in an effort to help conserve energy and reduce reliance on nonrenewable energy sources. Following is some recent news in 2015 about solar power systems in California.

© sheva_ua - Fotolia.comCalifornia Leads the Nation in Solar Power

One of the most exciting solar energy stories for California this year is that the state leads the nation in the usage of solar power. It will not be long before the state has 10 gigawatts of installed solar power. That is enough to power 2.5 million homes. Last year alone, the state added over 4.000 megawatts of solar power capacity, bringing the total to almost 10,000 megawatts. California takes its position as the leader in the solar energy area seriously. They lead by example, and hopefully other states will soon follow suit. One major factor that makes California the leader of the pack for solar energy usage is astute governing that has overseen the passage of bills that encourage and reward solar power usage by residents and businesses alike.

California Setting New Solar Records at Rapid Pace

The state of California has been busy lately. It produced a record amount of solar energy in June of 2015. However, it is likely that that record will be broken before too long by California. In fact, the state has set no fewer than 14 solar energy records that year, and that number is expected to keep going up. The summer months gave the area a significant amount of sunshine, as expected. The numbers that were already impressive in June were set to skyrocket by the end of August. There were times during the summer of 2015 that over half the state was being powered by renewable energy. The recent surge in the use of solar powered energy has been rapid and it is not expected to slow down any time soon. Plus, one amazing aspect of these records is that they do not take into account every instance of solar usage that takes place in the state. Thus, the numbers could potentially be even higher. Major contributors to the record-setting pace of increased use of solar energy include falling costs and a statewide mandate in renewable energy that requires major utilities to buy 33% of their retail electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

California Jumps Into The Future with SB 350

In early October 2015, California Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 350. This piece of legislation commits the state to continue reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. The main way to push this concept is through the use of renewable energy sources. These include solar energy; energy efficiency, and the electrification of transportation. The hope is that soon other states will follow suit. As more states come aboard, the entire country will be heading down a path toward a more sustainable future and less reliance on nonrenewable sources that are harmful to the environment.

California Finding New Ways to Extend Benefits of Solar to Lower-Income, Minority Communities

A new bill has been introduced to the Governor in hope of extending the benefits of solar energy to communities that otherwise do not have the opportunity to reap the benefits that can be gained by using this renewable energy source. Assembly Bill 693 aims to initiate a solar roof program that can accommodate multi-family dwellings. The program would be granted 100 million dollars a year for 10 years to install solar panels on at least 210,000 affordable housing units throughout the state. If the bill is approved, the recipients will save almost $40 million a year on electricity bills plus $19 million in solar tax credits and other benefits. This plan would be in addition to other programs that are already in place to assist other communities throughout the state that would otherwise have little to no access to the benefits of using solar energy power.

Teens Take to Learning Solar

Early one Saturday morning, instead of sleeping in, 12 teenagers from Tulare County High School installed photovoltaic systems on the home of a family residing in Porterville, California. The installation was spearheaded by the Single-Family Affordable Solar Housing program administrator, GRID Alternatives to kick off a new program called Solar Futures. The purpose of this program is to inspire today’s youth to become solar leaders by combining STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education with GRID Alternatives’ hands-on solar installation model. The program provides both classroom and hands-on education opportunities for students. Students are enjoying the program and the educational opportunities that come with it. It is a great way to expose high school students to the use of renewable energy sources while helping them build job skills for the future.

These stories are just a few instances that help the state be the leader in energy conservation and solar power energy usage. Be inspired to make a difference in energy conservation any way you can. In recent years, solar has been on the rise. Businesses are increasingly recognizing the importance of going solar as both a sustainability initiative and a way to save on energy costs, while individuals view solar power as a strong investment that will help them save money in the long run. And ultimately, using solar power for your electricity needs helps the environment, an impact that is especially crucial in California, where widespread sunshine means that solar panels can bring in more energy than almost anywhere else. Before moving forward, it’s important to understand the answer to one question: what are the benefits of using solar power in California?

© macrolink - Fotolia.comLower energy costs.

Installing solar panels on your home or business involves a short-term cost, which includes purchasing the panels themselves as well as installing them and setting up the electrical wiring. However, in the long term, the solar panels will provide you with some or all of the electricity you need. Ultimately, this can significantly reduce or eliminate energy costs. In the long term, solar panels can actually prove to be a solid return on investment, saving you more money than you spent on them originally. This is especially true in California, where the sunny weather makes it much easier to obtain the majority of your energy from the sun. It is often easier to harness this energy in California than places that are more overcast or that have variable weather.

Invest in the future.

Studies show that not only are energy costs in the U.S. often higher than people can afford, but that they are actually rising. This means that in the future, purchasing electricity from large power companies can become financially unfeasible for many households. Solar panels, by contrast, eliminate this problem, because you don’t pay for your electricity once you have the solar panels installed. Instead, it is a one-time fixed cost. The only cost you may have over the long term is for maintenance, which is not likely to rise significantly over time. Furthermore, the cost of solar panels is actually decreasing. This means right now, or in the near future, is the perfect time to buy solar panels, because for the first time in history they are within reach economically for many households.

Help the environment.

Everyone knows that solar panels help the environment. But few people understand exactly how big the environmental issue is, or why they should care. Electricity generated through coal or oil burning, or, to some extent, even through natural gas, releases carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse gases.” This creates an issue known as the “greenhouse gas effect,” which essentially blocks the sun’s rays from escaping the earth once they enter its atmosphere. Countless studies prove that greenhouse gas emissions have led to increased global temperatures, which will only continue to increase over the next few decades. Higher temperatures lead to melting ice caps, which in turn causes rising sea levels that can devastate coastlines in some areas and severe droughts that can cause widespread damage in others.

Show you care.

Why should people care? If you live near a coastline or in a drought-stricken area, both of which apply to the state of California, you will see the direct effects of global warming soon, if you haven’t already. However, you should also care because global warming is part of a larger problem, one that can affect people around the world. You have the chance to make a difference by choosing to generate your electricity through renewable sources, such as solar power, instead of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. Along with the impact on global temperatures, burning coal and oil also releases pollution and harmful fumes. This is an especially large problem in California metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Solar energy, by contrast, is clean energy, which means that it releases no harmful fumes, thus improving air quality and ensuring that it is safer to breathe outdoors.

Build your business sustainability.

In today’s environmentally conscious age, customers don’t just care about your product and customer service anymore. It is growing increasingly important to demonstrate community outreach and sustainable practices in order to earn your customers’ loyalty. Converting to solar can be a great way, not only to make an impact through your business, but to promote your commitment to sustainability and thus target the growing demographic that cares about environmental issues. This ultimately increases your customer base and impacts your profits in the long term.

Have you considered converting your California home to solar power? If you have not, you should. The more homes that rely on solar power rather than traditional energy sources, the better it is for the environment. But there are financial benefits to switching to solar energy as well. Below are the answers to the question “What are five financial reasons to solar power my home in California?”

© The Sign - Fotolia.com1. Stabilizes energy costs over time

Energy costs are constantly fluctuating. Therefore, it is hard to predict what your energy costs will be from year to year or even month to month. Although you can control your energy usage, it is impossible to control your energy rates. Therefore, even the most conservative energy user can see an unforeseen hike in energy costs in a short time span. Choosing to go solar can have an immediate and noticeable impact on your energy bill. Using solar energy means that you will be generating some of your own power and, therefore, can stop relying so heavily on the power provided by the electric company or other utility company. Recent research revealed the average price of electricity in California has increased by almost seven percent annually over the past 30 years. This number is expected to continue to increase in the future. By switching to solar energy, you can lock in your energy costs to avoid this steady increase.

2. Adds value to your home

It is always financially beneficial to make changes and improvements to your home that increase its resale value. There are varying opinions on a set monetary amount adding solar panels adds to your house. The bottom line is experts agree that the change does add value to a home. A report by the Appraisal Journal indicates that the value of a home can increase at a ratio of 20:1, meaning that for every $1,000 saved on a utility bill your home will increase in value by $20,000. That type of increase is too significant to ignore. Plus, it allows you to justify the initial expenditure of money to made the change in the first place.

3. It uses free fuel

Traditional energy sources require the use of fossil fuels. Extracting oil from the earth is costly, dangerous and messy. It also has numerous negative effects on the environment. One only needs to listen to the news to hear about the environmental dangers of fracking, which is also a costly venture. Solar energy, on the other hand, relies on the sunshine to function. Although the equipment to harness solar energy is not cost-free, sunshine is free for the taking. Sunshine is easy to harness and does not require large, ugly equipment to get the job done. It is far less obtrusive and far more practical and feasible to have solar panels on the roof of your house than an oil rig in the back yard.

4. Receive tax credits and other financial incentives

California is one of many states that offers tax credits and other financial incentives for homeowners who opt to use solar energy. This large initiative offers a federal tax credit for residential consumers for photovoltaics and solar water heating systems. The tax credit is approximately 30% of the cost of the solar system. The state also offers a tax exclusion for 100% of a new photovoltaic solar system for any homeowner who purchased and installed this type of system between the years 1999-2016. Not only does the government offer tax credits, but there are also rebates available. Some utility companies offer a rebate of as much as $3.80 per watt. When you combine the tax credits and rebates with the lower utility bill, the average homeowner can save thousands of dollars in a short period of time.

5. Save on your energy bills

For as long as there have been homes to live in, there have been additional costs associated with the home. One of the biggest expenses for homeowners is their utility bills. Although it does not always seem like our homes are using a lot of energy on a daily basis, they actually are. That is evident every month when the utility bills come. Solar energy can change all of that. Homeowners that convert to solar energy can see an immediate reduction in their utility bills. Since the home’s energy needs are supplied by the sun, there is less of a reliance on electricity. Therefore, the electric bills are drastically cut.

Using solar power in your California home can help save you money while it is helping the environment. If you are ready to make the conversion to solar power, work with a professional who can help you with the process and can answer any questions you have.

We have all heard the term “green company”, but have you ever asked yourself “What is a green company?”. If you have, you are not alone. Although most of us can identify that it has something to do with the environment, many people do not know much about green companies beyond that. However, there is so much more to companies that are considered green.

© UMB-O - Fotolia.comThe basics

At their core, green companies adopt principles that are consistent with being what average people consider environmentally friendly. Green companies aim to improve the lives of their customers, employees, communities, and the environment through their actions and choices.

Green companies have a sense of responsibility

Green companies act in socially and environmentally responsible ways. They constantly challenge themselves to conduct business in a way that both benefits society and helps the environment. Green companies work for economic justice as well as taking steps to save the environment. They also work toward making the world a better place through promoting community health and development.

Green businesses care for their workers

People who own green businesses know that their workers are a major key to their success. They use honest methods of hiring their employees and producing their products. Green companies also know the value of their workers and compensate them with fair wages and generous benefits.

Green companies protect their customers

Green companies use only safe ingredients. They also provide goods and services that help to sustain agriculture and find positive alternatives that improve the community in which they are located.

Green companies improve their communities

Green companies take definite steps to make sure their facilities are not polluting the air and water. However, their efforts to improve the community go far beyond that. Green companies are often located in areas that are considered marginalized such as inner-city neighborhoods and rural locations. Their presence and efforts make great contributions to making these places better and more accessible. They also offer employment opportunities for the people who live there and enable them to be active consumers in their own neighborhoods. Green companies in these locations bring dignity and respect that might not have otherwise been paid to these areas.

Green companies produce green products

Part of being a green business is producing products that are considered green. They evaluate their production processes and make changes that have a positive impact on the environment. They take a “triple bottom line” approach, which indicates that they have a three-pronged organization model that focuses on people, the planet and profit. They have benchmarks in place to assure their practices and policies are environmentally friendly. They think beyond the bottom line and include society and the environment in their business decisions. Green Marketing TV has identified some ways green companies work toward their goal:

  • They make conscious decisions to conserve water in their business practices. Not only do they reduce their own consumption, but they also make products that consume less water.
  • They build energy conservation into their daily business practices and long-term plans.
  • They reduce their solid waste production and practice recycle. Through every step of a process, a green company will reduce as much solid waste as possible and plans to recycle the waste that cannot be prevented.
  • They include pollution prevention in their business plans. They reduce the amount of toxins that go into their products, mitigate the toxins at the end of the process, and create toxin-free products.

Green companies conduct eco-friendly operations

Businesses that are not producers or manufacturers can also be considered green companies. Although the principles are the same, their practices and operations are a bit different. Businesses that operate out of an office space can be considered green by practicing the following standards:

  • Green office buildings make efforts to minimize the energy consumption by the people in the building. The owner and other decision makers make environmentally-conscious choices regarding the heating and cooling systems, install low-energy lighting, and put energy-conserving policies in place.
  • They reduce the amount of waste that is produced by minimizing packaging waste and ordering in bulk quantities. Employees use less paper and fewer disposables.
  • They enact company policies to reduce water consumption by everyone in the building.
  • They enact eco-friendly landscaping methods, use green cleaning supplies and try to offset any carbon emissions that are created to reduce their pollution output.

Green companies use solar power

One of the biggest drains on the environment is the excessive use of electricity. Converting to solar energy is a great way for a company to make strides toward being green. Solar energy requires almost no maintenance after it has been installed and it is incredibly reliable. Further, companies that convert to solar energy can easily reduce their operating costs and have increased marketing opportunities. Many companies that convert to solar energy see an increase in business opportunities as a direct result of the decision. The fact that they rely on natural power is a tangible sign to their clients and customers that they are making a commitment to positively impact the environment and the community.

Being a green company takes lots of hard work and dedication. However, the benefits it provides to the people who are in any way affected by the company as well as the environment make it all worthwhile.

Everyone has been hearing so much about solar energy in the media in the past several weeks, especially with President Obama and his administration revealing their plan to increase access to solar energy for Americans. And why not? Whatever your stance on politics may be, this initiative will reduce the cost of energy bills, create thousands of jobs and help us slow global warming by creating electricity without pollution.

© lculig - Fotolia.comSolar Power in California

California seems to be giving the rest of the United States a run for their money when it comes to solar power. They have over 4,000 megawatts of solar power installed on their rooftops and we can safely assume that’s a steadily growing number.

According to several studies, California has at least three of its cities in the top ten solar cities and up to seven in the top fifteen. Keep reading to learn more about solar power energy savings.

What Makes Solar Power Better Than The Alternative?

Right now, we get most of our electricity from coal because it is about five times less expensive than solar power. The problem with coal is that it also adds pollution to the air. It is a very dirty source for energy and it has the highest production rate of carbon dioxide, which is the main contributor to global warming.

It is much more safe to harness sunlight for our energy because it is non-polluting and does not bring harm to our environment. This is also a source of energy that will never run out. Let’s not forget that sunlight doesn’t cost us anything, and while there is an initial investment involved in gaining access to solar power energy, we can never overextend the energy of the sun.

How Exactly Does Solar Power Energy Actually Work?

The sun, like all light, contains energy. When light comes in contact with an object, the energy becomes heat. However, with solar energy, light from the sun can hit solar panels that turn that energy into electricity which we can then use for power in our homes.

More specifically, solar panels are made of photovoltaic (PV) cells. These cells turn sunlight into direct current (DC). An inverter then converts that energy into alternating current (AC) which is what we use to power out televisions and microwaves.

How Much Does It Cost?

When it comes to solar energy, the initial thought tends to be something like “how much would it cost me to install these panels?” Sure, the cost of installation may be significant. Solar panel systems from 3 to 8kW and can cost thousands of dollars to install on your roof.

But remember, the process of making solar panels is a delicate one and its design is very intricate. It is also important to consider the environmental and savings benefits that come along with it. Solar panels are a great investment because there is a vast payoff for not only you, but the rest of the planet.

So How Much Do You Actually Save?

With that said, we’ve come to the most important question. “Exactly how much money will installing a solar panel system on my roof save me in the long run?” When it comes to solar energy, the key is to think about the long-term benefits. Think about how much money you will save over time once you’ve installed a system that gets its energy from the sun.

The average family spends about $170 per month on their energy bill; that means about $2,040 per year. With a solar energy system in place, home owners can save over $1,000 a year on their energy bill.

Solar Power Is Not One-Size-Fits All

There is no one way to exactly calculate how much money one will save when they have solar a panel system installed on their roofs as it is determined by many factors. However, many studies have shown that home owners save about 50%, and in many cases, that percentage can be even higher.

Overall, the amount of money you save on your energy bill each month will depend on how much the panels cost you to install, your energy bill cost, your roof, the size of your property and many other factors.

The cost of energy is rising and the cost of solar energy power is actually dropping. It is becoming far more affordable to access solar power energy today. There are many options you can take advantage of in order to install your own solar energy panels, including leasing the panels or taking out a loan to pay for them. Either way, there are immense amounts of money to be saved in the long run and you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. Taking steps like these make for very worthwhile investments that help our environment and make Earth a cleaner, safer place for all of us.

© Romolo Tavani - Fotolia.comSolar energy is increasing in popularity. Many homeowners and businesses alike are turning to the energy generated by the sun to provide the power they need to operate homes and office buildings. However, the average American does not know or understand much about solar energy and how it works. Following is a basic overview of solar energy power that will answer the common question, “How does a solar power system work in homes and businesses?”

Parts of a solar energy system

There are three basic parts of a residential solar energy system. The solar modules are the large panels that are on top of a house to absorb sunlight. The inverter takes the power that is generated by the solar panels and turns it into power that the house can use. Specifically, it converts direct current (DC) power into alternating current (AC) power. The utility meter keeps track of and displays the energy that can be produced or used. Any energy that is not used gets put back into the grid.

How does a solar power system work?

There are two basic types of solar power systems, grid-tied systems and off-grid systems. Grid-tied systems use energy from the energy grid. They generate power onsite to give electricity a home or business that is connected to the grid. Off-grid systems are designed to be more self-reliant. They supply energy to a home or other facility that is remote and, therefore, do not have access to the grid. The electricity for off-grid systems is stored in large battery banks and is drawn from by its users when it is needed.

How does sunlight convert to solar power?

Solar panels use the energy of speeding photons to create an electrical current. The photons are created in the sun by the fusion of atoms. Once it reaches the surface of the sun, it can reach the Earth in about eight minutes. Just as the sun’s power has provided energy for plants and other living organisms on earth, it can provide energy for homes and businesses.

Banking energy

A solar energy system produces more energy in the summer than it does in the winter. People who use solar energy to fuel their homes can “bank” the energy they do not use during the warmer weather and use it within the following twelve months. Users only pay for their yearly net usage of power.

Benefits of installing solar panels in the home

Installing solar panels in the home has many benefits. Since the homeowner is producing the energy, utility bills will be lower. The photovoltaic (PV) system that provides the energy will typically last for more than two decades, so the homeowner is protected against frequent rate hikes by the utility company. The solar system may also increase the value of a home without emitting greenhouse gasses or other types of pollution that are harmful to the environment.

Getting a home ready to go solar

Before a house can be ready for solar energy, some prep work needs to be done. First, an energy audit should be conducted. Many municipalities require an audit of this nature for a homeowner to be eligible for tax breaks. If the solar panels are going to be installed on the roof, the roof should be inspected to see if it needs to be repaired or replaced. Then consumers must find solar installers who will guarantee their work and are certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). It is also wise to learn about solar technologies, financing options and PV incentives.

Tax incentives

Many municipalities offer tax incentives for homeowners who opt for solar energy power. There are both state and federal programs that can help homeowners defray the cost of installing solar panels. Homeowners who are interested in going solar should check with their local government offices to find out more about applying for these incentives.

Solar energy for business offices

Solar energy is not limited to houses. It has many benefits for businesses as well. Solar energy is harnessed for businesses the same way it is harnessed for home use. The energy that is generated for offices can be used to run all traditional office equipment. A business can see lower utility costs, but the benefits go beyond that. Using solar energy is a major step in a company reducing its overall operating expenses and increases its corporate sustainability initiative.

The energy generated from the sun provides enough power to benefit innumerable homes and businesses. Solar energy provides benefits for anyone that uses it, without hurting the environment with harmful greenhouse emissions.

Using solar energy has many benefits for companies. It can save money as well as conserve energy. In fact, in order to encourage businesses to switch to solar power for their energy needs, many municipalities are offering tax incentives. Before a company jumps head-first into using solar energy, some important factors need to be considered. Here are several key factors to consider when investing in commercial solar power systems in California.

It goes without saying that solar energy relies on the sun. If your building does not receive an adequate amount of sunlight, installing solar energy panels may not to be helpful to your business. It is incredibly important that solar panels receive enough light in order to generate energy. Buildings that are surrounded by numerous trees, have a large chimney, or have other structures that will block the sun during the day may not benefit from installing solar panels. Sometimes structures or landscaping can be moved or eliminated to ensure the building gets enough sunlight. The direction the roof faces is also a major consideration. Roofs that face south might not get sufficient light during the day to generate enough power for the business’ needs. It is important to consult with a professional to learn more about the level of sunlight the building is exposed to throughout the day.

What are the company’s goals for solar power?

Your company’s ultimate goal for solar power is an important factor to think about before making a final decision to switch over. That goal will dictate the type of system that is needed. If you want to completely power every aspect of the company, you will need a large system that will usually be more costly. If your goal is to sell your surplus energy back to the supplier, a completely different type of system is needed. Business owners and managers need to think about long-term goals as well as those for the short-term. Also, consider the length of time your business plans to stay in its current facility.

What will it cost?

Although the price of solar energy has steadily been going down over the past few years, it is still a significant investment. The price of solar energy can vary greatly, based on many factors such as wattage, the number of panels that are needed, the installation company that is used and the permitting and zoning process. A solar energy system can cost as little as a few thousand dollars, while some systems can cost as much more. It is important to compare the installation cost of a solar system to the standard price of a traditional energy source in the local area. This comparison will give you a good idea of how much money can be saved annually and how long it will take for a solar energy system to pay for itself. This data will help you determine whether or not you will be able to save money by switching to solar energy.

Should you lease or buy solar panels?

All of your company’s expenditures need to be given great thought and how you pay for your company’s solar panels is no exception. The right payment option for the company can be the difference between investing in solar energy and shelving the idea despite its benefits. Purchasing solar panels outright provides immediate savings on power bills that are ongoing. Solar panels that are purchased usually pay for themselves within 10 years. On the other hand, leasing solar panels allows the company to pay less money for them at the outset. When companies choose this method of financing solar panels, the repair and maintenance costs are then the responsibility of the leasing company.

Does the cost outweigh the benefits?

As a business owner, it is in your best interest to weigh the cost against the benefits of every purchase that is made. Although the savings on power bills is significant, there is still an initial cost involved for the installation of the panels. If tax incentives or grants are being offered, those numbers need to be factored into the decision as well. Overall, deciding if the costs are worth the monetary expense can only be determined by the principals of a company after looking at all of the pertinent numbers that are involved. Another factor to keep in mind is the benefits of protecting the environment and the ability to promote a business as “going green.” This can help a company to reach out to potential clients it might not have attracted before.

Deciding to go solar is a huge decision for any company. There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration before making the final determination. Work with industry professionals to get all the answers and find out more about the possibility of your business switching over to solar power.

Many people think that going off-grid for their power source simply means that they will no longer have an electricity bill. However, there are other reasons that make going off the grid a wise idea as well. Going off the grid is good for the environment, as most energy is created from renewable sources. It eliminates vulnerability from utility outages. It allows homeowners to take personal responsibility for their own energy impact on the earth. Also, it makes good economic sense.

When does going off-grid make sense?

Going off of the grid is a personal decision and the best time to do it depends on various factors, including personal motivation. Before you decide to go off-grid, you need to think realistically about what you can do off-grid and how much it will cost. You will also need to take into consideration how much time and you will need to put into living completely off-grid and how it will affect the other aspects of your life. But, once you have weighed all the pros and cons, and make the decision to live off-grid, committing to it will make perfect sense.

Lifestyle considerations

The idea of living off the grid is appealing to many people who are seeking a particular lifestyle. Those who live off the grid tend to desire a more “hands-on” approach to life. They often grow their own food, live off of the land, and sometimes even raise animals on their land. Living off the grid fits into this type of lifestyle of self-reliance and self-sufficiency.

The cost factor

There are certainly cost considerations with going off-grid for your home’s energy source. It is important to compare the cost of solar energy if you stay on the grid as well as for going off of it. Do the math carefully to make an educated choice about going off the grid.

Off-grid real estate costs

The cost of the actual power is not the only monetary consideration to take into account. The cost of real estate can also be much less in areas where being off the grid for your power needs is an option. In some areas, homes that are located off the grid can cost almost half of what homes on the grid cost. Further, the real estate values of homes that are off the grid will continue to rise, especially as solar energy becomes a more sought-after source of power. Even it there is an initial outlay of money to set up solar power off the grid, there is still an overall money savings.

Ongoing costs after installation

Once an off -grid solar system is installed in a home, there are ongoing costs that need to be taken into consideration. You will still need to pay for fuel, upkeep for the generator, and batteries to name just a few expenses. Since there are ongoing costs associated with having off-grid solar energy, most homeowners want to save money wherever they can. As a result, they are looking to find the best value possible on their solar panels to minimize the initial investment as much as possible.

Battery bank

Solar energy is great on sunny days when there is no shortage of your energy source. However, energy is still needed on cloudy days and after the sun goes down. When you decide to live off-grid, you need to have a way to harness the energy when the sun is out and store it for times when it is not. The answer is investing in energy-storing batteries. These batteries can cost several thousand dollars, but you cannot go without them. Before you decide to live off-grid, be sure to have a plan in action on how you are going to pay for them.

Deciding to make the move off-grid in California involves an initial investment and finding a good value on solar panels can be a major key to saving money. Work with an industry professional who can help you every step of the way. From choosing solar panels for to determining the best ways to go off-grid, working with an expert makes it possible to achieve your goals.
